Sky Glass

Senior Motion Designer, Sky Creative Agency

I worked at the core of the Sky Creative team over several months on the development of the 2nd generation of Sky Glass - Sky’s all-in-one TV. I was fortunate enough to be involved throughout the project - from its early ‘concepting and exploration’ phase - all the way through to the production of final assets.

Developing the Sky Glass Gen 2 brand aesthetic

We spent several months developing the aesthetic of Sky Glass Gen 2. We knew a key asset would be the wallpaper as it would be seen in promotional material and on the display itself. The exact nature of this asset needed to be a seamless, elegant combination of the Sky brand colour spectrum and a glass material. We explored and iterated many different approaches.

My role evolved from motion designer within the Brand team, through to working closely with the Brand Studios team - Sky Creative’s in-house 3D visual effects and production team. We continued with more advanced look-development on to the creation of final motion assets. We created the overall ‘look’ of glass, all the promotional motion assets for the Sky Glass sizzle film and many other deliverables.

Alternative approaches

The first generation of the Sky Glass TV used ‘pixels’ as a promotional brand device - an explosion of thousands of spectrum coloured dots that articulated the audio capabilities of the built-in speaker. With this 2nd generation of the TV we also explored numerous ‘pixel’ alternatives, incase there was a desire to retain a connection to the established brand asset of the Sky Glass first generation TV. More an evolution of the brand, rather than a clean slate.

Before it was decided that the glass treatment was the way to go, there was also a campaign idea -‘There’s more inside’. I was asked to explore a few frames that might articulate that thought.
